While the Canadian media draws attention to a supposed “brain drain”, or emigration of highly skilled individuals, to the United States, analysts have argued that this phenomenon is balanced by the influx of highly-skilled individuals from other parts of the world. According to one report, the number of people entering Canada with master’s and doctoral degrees alone each year is equal to the number of university graduates at all levels – including the undergraduate or bachelor level – who leave the country for the United States.
According to the 2011 National Household Survey, there were more than 200 different ethnic origins in Canada. This diversity continues to be a prominent feature of Canada. Immigration is the most important component of population growth in Canada, as well as changes in the origin of new immigrants suggest that Canada will continue to be a diverse country. Between 2006 and 2011, about 1.2 million foreign-born people immigrated to Canada. These recent immigrants account for 17.2% of foreign-born population and 3.5% of the total population in Canada.
The Immigrant Population

For statistical resolution, immigrants are defined as individuals who are, or have ever been, landed immigrants in Canada, i.e., people who have been granted the right to live in Canada permanently by Citizenship Immigration Canada (CIC). In 2001, 18% of the Canada’s population born overseas and therefore is classified as belonging to the immigrant population.
Between 2006 and 2011, the vast majority of new immigrants settled in one of Canada's major cities. At that time, 62.5% of new immigrants settled in one of three largest cities of Canada, i.e. Toronto (32.8%), Montreal (16.3%) or Vancouver 13.3 (%). This is an increase from 1970 when 58% of immigrants settled in these three cities.
Citizenship in Canada
In 2001, 70% of the total migrant populations were naturalized citizens. In 2003, 112,978 people have been naturalized; in 2004 the total was 146,919. In recent years, immigrants from China and India have the highest rates of naturalization. Other countries in the top ten include Pakistan, the Philippines, South Korea and Sri Lanka based on 2004 statistics.
In order to become a naturalized citizen, a person must be a permanent resident of Canada (i.e., must be granted permission for permanent residence in Canada by the immigration authorities) must have lived in Canada for at least four of the six years preceding the application date, must be able to communicate in English or French, and must demonstrate knowledge of Canada and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. This used to be three years out of six years before the application date before August 2015.
Canada Business and Investment Immigration Overview

Canada offers the most established and most widely used investment immigration programs in the world that leads to permanent resident status for the applicant. Under the Canadian model, business immigrants can enjoy the benefits of a national health care program as well as a first-class education system, and the national pension system, which provides a measurable annual income upon retirement. These are just some of the advantages that Permanent Residents of Canada enjoy after they become P.R. of Canada.
Business immigration to Canada includes Quebec Immigration Investor Program, Quebec Entrepreneur Program, and several other provincial program as well as federal and Quebec self-employed programs and different skilled worker programs (Quebec, federal and other provinces). While a variety of self-employed entrepreneur and programs are aimed at people with mid-range capital, which intend to set up and run a business in Canada, the Investor Immigration Program is ideal for the investors with higher personal net worth (more than 1.6 million dollars) who want to make passive investments and do not have to create and run a business of their own in Canada.
